Elephant Pharm will host renowned nutritionist, and author Marion Nestle for a talk at its Berkeley store at 1607 Shattuck Ave. on March 1st from 5 to 6:30 pm. The talk is free and open to the public. Nestle views today's supermarket as an agribusiness battleground where companies put their profits before consumers' health and well-being.

Marion's talk is part of our ongoing effort to help people make wise health and wellness choices and we are extremely pleased to host someone with her expertise, said Chandre Sarkar, the company's director of wellness education and community outreach.

Elephant Pharm provides a vibrant alternative to typical drug stores. Its stores offer conventional and alternative products and services including traditional and herbal pharmacies as well as a regular schedule of free programs and classes. It currently has three stores in Berkeley, San Rafael and Los Altos and plans to open a fourth, in Walnut Creek, in mid-April.

During her talk, Nestle will teach shoppers how to survive their next trip to a supermarket. She will provide an expert virtual tour of a conventional food store, helping consumers make better shopping and eating decisions. She will point out what they need to know about about such issues as fresh and frozen, wild and farm-raised, organic and natural, and omega-3 and trans fats. She will decode and demystify food labels, nutrition and health claims, and portion sizes, and show how to balance decisions about food on the basis of freshness, taste, nutrition, and health, but also social and environmental issues and, of course, price.

USA TODAY reviewer Phil Lampert described her book, What to Eat as the perfect guidebook to help navigate through the confusion of which foods are good for us, what labels we can believe in and, most important, which are the foods to avoid.
